The Environmental Management System (EMS) : an eco-responsible approach towards the certification of INRAE units and experimental facilities

Aware of its environmental duty, INRAE implements a strategy of social and environmental responsibility. The collective EMS (Environmental Management System) approach, aimed at improving our environmental performance and achieving ISO 14001 certification of experimental units and facilities, is the spearhead of this strategy.

It has been supported since 2013 by the CNUE (Commission Nationale des Unités Expérimentales) and PPE (Pôle de Protection de l'Environnement).

Its implementation is based on a voluntary commitment enabling:

  • A better understanding of the environmental impacts of our activities;
  • Compliance with regulations;
  • A continuous improvement of our practices towards the reduction of our negative impacts on the environment.

The approach, initiated by the GAFL research unit as part of its experimental facilities, is now supported by A2M, which achieved ISO 14001 certification in 2021.

In connection with the SME collective policy, the priority objectives of the A2M experimental facility are defined as follows:

  • Complying with environmental regulations and other nationally and locally applicable requirements,
  • Improving the control of our waste by finding suitable waste treatment procedures,
  • Reducing and controling risks related to emergency situations (fires/explosions, accidental pollutions)
  • Quantifying, controling and reducing whenever possible our energy and fluids consumption, as well as our water consumption,
  • Limit the use of phytosanitary products by deploying an integrated pest management strategy.

The A2M experimental facility also follows the institute's policies regarding Management by Quality and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) .
